Things that Rule Thursdays: Samples

This week I’m gonna take a break from the albums that are important to me segments and do a true TTRT. This week samples rule. I’m talking of course about songs that an artist took something from and made it into their own song. I always love to hear the original song because the majority of the time they are truly beautiful pieces of music. I have been meaning to do this as a Things that Rule now for a while and finally was inspired to do it this week when I listened to ‘Perpetuum Mobile’ by Penguin Cafe Orchestra again today. I had originally found this song about a year ago now when I was up really late on a roll finding where many of my favorite artists had been getting the samples for their songs. I then stumbled across ‘Perpetuum Mobile’ which of course Avicii sampled for his song fittingly titled ‘Penguin’ which eventually became ‘Fade into Darkness’. The original song is such an incredible piece of music, as are ‘Penguin’ and ‘Fade Into Darkness’, it’s something that really anyone who hears can appreciate for its beauty. This week I’m not gonna post mp3 versions of the songs if you want them you can find them, instead I’m gonna post YouTube links to them and say what song they were sampled to make.

First one of course is, ‘Perpetuum Mobile’ by Penguin Cafe Orchestra which as mentioned earlier was sampled by Avicii for ‘Penguin’ which then got vocals and made ‘Fade into Darkness’.

I often wondered where Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP got the sample for ‘We No Speak Americano’ cause it’s one of the sickest ones I’ve ever heard. A little digging I discovered they sampled ‘Tu Vuò Fà L’Americano’ by Renato Carosone an Italian song released in the 1950s. Oddly enough ‘We No Speak Americano’ was actually sampled for another song, Pitbull’s ‘Bon Bon’. Regardless the original song rules so much and check the dudes playing in the video, too much swag.

I could probably do a Thursday of just Bingo Players samples but for now I’ll just give you one of my favorites. Probably their biggest hit to date ‘Cry (Just a Little)’ samples a song from the late 1980s by Brenda Russell called ‘Piano In The Dark’. It’s so awesome when it hits the chorus and you hear that sample “I know caught up in the middle I cry just a little, when I think of letting go.” Not surprising how good the original is, Brenda Russell has an amazing voice.

Doesn’t always have to be a song that get sampled, Deadmau5 sampled a movie for his song ‘Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff’. It’s a strange movie from the 1950s called The Brain of Arous, instead of posting the movie I found a decent video that shows you where the samples are with the song playing along with the video.

That’s it for this weeks Things that Rule Thursdays, next week I will return to albums that are important to me. Expect another one of these with samples from songs in it, I have a lot of fun doing this.

Best of 2011 Vol. 2

The second half of the spring and early summer brought some unforgettable tracks to EDM world.  Avicii released Levels, Enough is Enough, and Fade Into Darkness, while Swanky Tunes released XOXO, and The Bingo Players brought us Cry Just A Little.  Everyone one of these tracks were huge club hits, and some of these will be EDM hits for years to come! enjoy.

First up is a track that was highly anticipated after the preview was released, it was by Afrojack and R3hab entitled Ace’s High (Prutata). It featured an unreal build up leading into a unreal bassline that you’d expect from an Afrojack R3hab collab matched with a fun sample that just screams ‘WOO’. enjoy

Possibly the most anticipated song of the year was Save The World by the Swedish House Mafia.  I remember having a rip with Pete Tong talking all over it for months.  The song features vocals from John Martin and a Swedish House Mafia drop that your accustomed to. enjoy.

Swedish House Mafia Featuring John Martin-Save The World (Original Mix)

The biggest song of the year had to of been Avicii’s Levels.  It features an unreal synth line that just forces you to dance, adds a bass line and in the middle has a beautiful violin.  This was easily the best song of the year in my opinion it still is tearing up clubs all over the world and is still being remixed by some of the biggest names out there.

Avicii-ID (Levels) (Original Mix)

Calvin Harris is one producer that had himself a year in 2011 coming out with three of the summers biggest tracks.  Awooga is not stereotypical Calvin at all, it features a happy little synth line into just super heavy bass that creates madness on the dance floor.  His other jam was Feel So Close, which was a beautiful little ditty that featured vocals by Calvin Harris himself, a nice guitar line that is complemented by a nearly perfect bass line. His third song of the summer was Bounce which was very poppy and very catchy. It featured vocals by Kelis a unreal synth line, a beautiful bass line, and when you put them all together it was nearly impossible not to dance.

One of the biggest songs of the summer had to XOXO by the Swanky Tunes.  It features an amazing piano line, accompanied by a great bass line.  The song is very uplifting and will get any party moving. enjoy.

Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike’s Madagascar was one of the bigger club hits of the year, and rightfully so.  It features a fun sample telling you not to touch your stereo while a fun little synth line is going then it drops into madness, with a heavy bass line and distorted synths.

Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike-Madagascar (Original Mix)

In addition to Levels Avicii had two other huge club hits, Fade Into Darkness and Enough Is Enough.  Fade Into Darkness was his final product of Penguin which has leaked in the spring.  It features and unreal piano line and beautiful vocals to go along with it.  Enough is Enough had to be the premier love song of the summer with lyrics about why the one you love shouldn’t leave, and a drop  with great synths and heavier bass.  I fell in love with the song from the first time I heard it and I bet you will too.

Avicii-Don’t Give Up On Us (Enough Is Enough)

At Tomorrowland Afrojack stole the show releasing two new tracks that left most in awe.  The first was No Beef with Steve Aoki, which featured a fun synth line, which dropped into heavy bass and lots of beeps.  It then had a fun vocal part which then dropped back into the same dutch house with heavy bass.  He also played The Way We See The World which featured Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, and Nervo.  This track featured awesome vocals and an awesome bass and synth filled first drop, then the second drop is just filled with bass and a distorted synth line. enjoy

Goodwill and Hook and Slings Take You Higher is one of the most relaxing and fun house songs of the year.  It features beautiful vocals and a fun guitar line, matched with a piano line and fun bass line.  This is a song I could listen to on repeat all day long, I’m actually not kidding…It’s been done.

Featured Friday: Avicii

Tim Bergling aka Avicii aka Tom Hangs, has just been tearing up the EDM scene jumping from 39 to 6th on DJ Mags top DJs of the year list.  He has produced some of our favorite EDM tracks of all time like Seek Bromance and his remix of Robyn’s Hang With Me.  He has also produced some of the biggest tracks of the year including Blessed, Levels, Fade Into Darkness, and Enough Is Enough.  He’s got a ton of new previews and next year is looking even brighter for the 22 year old phenom.  He has been touring all over the US this year, and I’ve been fortunate to see him twice and he was unreal.  If you get the chance to see him I’d highly recommend you go.
